The fifth film in our series, “Saints and Sinners” is The Apostle (1997, rated PG-13, 134 minutes), starring and directed by Robert Duvall, with Farrah Fawcett, Miranda Richardson and Billy Bob Thornton
After Euliss “Sonny” Dewey (Robert Duvall), an eccentric Pentecostal preacher, learns that his wife is having an affair, he commits an act of violence that results in his flight from his home parish in the state of Texas. Now in a small Louisiana town, Sonny goes by the name of “Apostle E.F.” and opens a new church and begins a radio broadcast with the help of a retired pastor. While battling personal demons and injecting new life into his congregation, Sonny searches for peace in his new life. But his redemption may come with a greater cost.
This was a multiple award-winning independent film that will challenge your views of what makes a “good man.” Critic Roger Ebert praised the film highly, noting that “its power comes from its central character’s very weaknesses, making it a subtle and complex almost documentary-style piece.”
