Our first film in the series is Danny Boyle’s wonderful 2004 gem, Millions (rated PG-13, 101 minutes).
The plot: Millions tells the story of Damian, a seven-year old Catholic school boy, whose family has recently moved to the suburbs after the death of his mother. Soon after the move, Damian’s cardboard box “hermitage,” built near some train tracks, is disturbed by a bag of money flung from a passing train. Damian shows the money to his brother Anthony, and the two begin to plot what to do with the newfound cash.
But in their discernment process, some questions abound: Where did the money come from? Who flung it from the train? Should they go public with the discovery? Why does Damian suddenly receive visions of the apostles offering advice? And should Damian follow the guidance of local Mormon missionaries who encourage him to use the gains to feed the poor? And so begins a whimsical tale of ethics, faith, stewardship and an answer to the question, “Is anyone truly good?”
