Rev. Laura Norvell, Pastor
The Rev. Laura Norvell, native of the Chicago area, is a graduate of Indiana University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and a Master of Divinity degree from Wesley Theological Seminary. She is done with coursework and currently working on her doctoral project at Wesley and anticipates completing her Doctor of Ministry in May 2020. She has worked as a development professional in higher education, religion and social service since 1991, transitioning to Maryland in 2000, with a brief break for being a full-time classroom volunteer and PTA president while her children were small. Ordained a full elder in the Baltimore-Washington Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church in May 2018, she recently served at Ferndale United Methodist Church in Glen Burnie, Maryland prior to her appointment at Faith in 2019. She also currently serves in extension ministry as Special Assistant to the President for Alumni Relations at Wesley Theological Seminary. Since 2004, she has worked at Grace UMC in Gaithersburg, Liberty Grove UMC in Burtonsville and Emmanuel UMC in Laurel.
Deeply rooted in a belief in the grace and gifts given all of God’s children, her call is to build relationships among people so that people are transformed and transforming, thereby growing and leading the body of Christ in making disciples for the transformation of the world. Laura is a writer, a runner, practices yoga and loves to cook – Indian food is the favorite.
Laura is married to the Rev. Matt Norvell, ordained in the American Baptist Church, who is the chaplain for the Children’s Center at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and teaches internationally on patient safety. Matt gardens for his peace and recovery after long days at the hospital, and specializes in cultivating heirloom tomatoes. She has four children and with the nest mostly empty, has adopted two canine kids to fill the emptiness.
